Where is artificial intelligence in iOS notifications?
I hate iPhone notifications. They are simply useless and pile up only for you to swipe away when you remember. Innovation is needed in this area and Apple is simply turning a cold shoulder on this important matter. Android has done it better for years and it is mind-bending to think that Apple is never catching up on this important element
What is wrong with iOS Notifications
The problem is profound deep inside the system. It can be observed in various instances. Say you are watching a video or playing a game. Suddenly, you receive a text and it takes a big chunk of your screen. You dismiss it then, another message and again you dismiss it. The system should know that you don’t want to receive a text from that person and simply snooze it for later. But no, that is not the case. Another example if you have an app to remind of something that happens at a certain time only for instance prayer time. lots of the time I miss that notification. two days later I found that notification still hanging in the history of my notifications. Why apple? The third-party apps should be able to be smart enough about situational notification and Apple should provide the tool and guidelines. Swiping the notification away is still dump and yes there were improvements in the previous iterations of iOS but not satisfactory. Grouping the notifications is an issue as well. Each notification will be dealt with separately in IOS even if all notification were from the same app. Why not group them for easy management and to decrease the clutter?
Stuck in the past
iOS software elements have seen a drastic change. There were major innovations in iMessage, photos heck even the contacts. Notifications are still stuck in the past and once I open that shade I am immediately taken to 2008 because I have to deal with a dump NON-smart UI element of iOS. It is time for a change Apple and 2017 is the year of thriving AI technologies. Notifications area should not be ignored. In fact, it is an area that should receive a special treatment. Sometimes I don’t want to unlock my phone because I don’t want a distraction. However, I want to check if something important is happening. The notification area should allow me to do some quick interactions without having to unlock the phone. For example, I can press and hold (3D touch) and get more information about that notification without unlocking the phone. Android has done this for years and it is super useful. I wish if the iPhone learns my behavior and sees the pattern of how I deal with notification. It should prioritize based on that so it can o present the information neatly.
Why bragging AI when the UI lacks it
Apples take pride in implementing AI in their photo app and in their Animojie (Clearly their biggest innovation). However, you seem to allocate more resources to have new features rather than cleaning up their user interface. For years many have mocked apple for their lack of innovation and incremental updates. I would argue that they were careful and scrutinizing fine details. Today Apple put new features first while omitting the basics. They became more careless and clumsy. Notifications area on the iPhone desperately needs AI. People depend on their iPhone to optimize their workflow and an outdated notification area won’t cut it anymore.
